When the crimean war broke out, Mary was in England and applied to be in Florences nursing crew. Florence turned her down because she was black. So in Crimea, Mary opened the 'British Hotel'. Mary was nearly hit several times when she was riding around on the battle field. One time she fell, and dislocated her thumb and it never went back to its original shape. It was open for three years, but after the war Mary had no money, and then lived in England. When people found out how poor she was they gave her money.
