She was born on the 24th of July, 1897 in Kansas. She is known for being the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean, and set loads of records. She was known as Amy or Meeley, and had a little sister called Grace. In 1918 Amelia caught pneumonia, and had great sinus trouble that would later affect her career. She helped in hospitals when she was 21. She first became involved in into flying when she went to a flying exhibition put on by World War I 'Ace'. Amelia loved all the planes, and so went with her father to a friends airfield. He gave her a ride and she knew she wanted to fly from then on.
